I have always been very closely connected and strongly influenced by where I am, those that are around me, and big events happening in my life. I thrive on change and believe that new experiences incite creativity and keep my mind fresh. The work I create relates to personal life experiences, and serves as a reminder of the myriad of roles that I have chosen to embody. I want to have it all, do it all, and see it all. Most of the time that just isn't possible, so I enjoy finding ways to make work that can be many things simultaneously. I strive to make work that is a hybrid mix of contradiction; mature and innocent, manufactured and organic, novel yet familiar.
My sculptures begin as a complex vocabulary of slipcast clay parts. Out of this bedlam, sculptures are assembled together intuitively. I frequently work in series, making many sculptures similar in form- which allows more animate qualities to emerge. Successful sculptures are mated with bright colors, texture, and pattern.
This current body of work has developed from similar constructs, but also explores ideas of obligation and attachment. Many of the sculptures are paired- emulating a parent-child or sibling relationship. A darker color palate emphasizes the seriousness of the affair, and loosely brushed shapes of color accentuate the fragility and imperfection that persists in the dynamic.
